Ruan Mirukova is a young Varisian living in Korvosa. He is somewhat of a prodigy and a youth fulmaster of a most unconventional instrument, the ocarina.

After he was hired by the Carowyn family to play on one of their famous soirees (tastelessly, held during the worst of the blood veil crisis), he was not seen again.

His sister, Deyanira Mirukova, hired the heroes to investigate.

The heroes found the venue to be filled with masqueraded nobles who had been infected with a violent disease that looked a lot like blood veil and transformed into mindless zombies. Ruan, however, was nowhere to be found.
